In short
The renewal application must be filed at least 90 days before the permit expires. That term changed in 2026: it used to be sixty days, and most guides still in circulation say so, which means people following them file thirty days late without realising. The receipt lets you stay and work while the application is processed.
The deadline changed, and most sources are wrong
The application is due at least 90 days before expiry. Until 2026 it was sixty days, and the change has not propagated: guides, forum posts, HR spreadsheets and the reminders people set after their last renewal all still say sixty.
The effect is that someone following perfectly sensible advice files thirty days late and does not know it. For a company with several foreign employees, a single scheduling template based on the old term produces late filings across the whole workforce.

What renewal actually examines
Renewal is not a formality. The office checks that the conditions on which the permit was granted still hold: the employment relationship, the course of study, the family tie.
That means the documents to prepare are the ones that evidence continuity — a current contract and recent payslips, enrolment and attendance, the family situation as it stands now rather than as it was at the first application.
Where circumstances have changed substantially, that is a conversation to have before filing rather than a surprise to spring on the office. In several situations a change of circumstances opens a different and better permit, and the renewal is the natural moment to make the switch.
- The postal kit form, completed and signed.
- Full copy of your passport, every page.
- The expiring permit.
- Evidence that the grounds still apply: contract and payslips, enrolment, civil status documents.
- Duty stamp of €16.00 and the fee corresponding to the permit's duration.
- Four recent passport photographs.
While you wait
The receipt, together with the expired permit, allows you to stay in Italy and to continue working while the application is processed. The legal time limit for issuing is 90 days, reduced to 30 days for the single work and residence permit.
What it does not do is make travel safe. The receipt is not a travel document and re-entry is not guaranteed; carriers apply their own checks. A trip abroad with a pending application is the decision that turns a manageable situation into a serious one.
If the permit has already expired
File anyway, and quickly. Italian law provides for removal where a permit has expired by more than 60 days and no renewal has been requested — both conditions together. Having filed, even late, changes your position.
If the delay has a documented cause — illness, bereavement, an objective impediment — attach the evidence rather than explaining it at the counter.
If nothing happens
Processing often exceeds the legal term. Before acting, establish whether the term has genuinely passed, counting from the filing date on your receipt.
If it has, there are tools and they work in sequence: a formal request that the procedure be concluded, access to the file, a request to the official holding substitute powers, and finally an action against administrative silence, available within 1 year of the deadline passing.
What does not work is filing a second identical application because the first appears stuck. It duplicates the file and delays both.
