In short
An Italy student visa requires pre-enrolment at a recognised institution through the Universitaly portal, proof of financial means, accommodation and health cover. After arrival the student permit is applied for within 8 giorni lavorativi. It allows limited working hours and can be converted to a work permit after graduation, subject to annual quotas.
One of the more accessible routes — with a catch at the end
The student route is relatively straightforward to enter, and it is how many international professionals first arrive in Italy. The part that needs planning from the outset is the exit.
Many international students want to stay after graduating, and that requires converting the student permit into a work permit — a conversion subject to annual quotas. Someone who starts thinking about it once they have graduated may find the year's quota exhausted, with a student permit approaching expiry. Someone who plans it during their final year arrives prepared.
Requirements and sequence
The timetable is set by Universitaly pre-enrolment deadlines, which fall months before courses begin.
- Pre-enrolment on the Universitaly portal, within the deadlines set annually by the Ministry of University.
- Recognition of your previous qualification, or a declaration of value from the Italian diplomatic mission.
- Proof of financial means for the duration of your stay, from your own resources or your family's.
- Accommodation in Italy, including university housing.
- Health cover: insurance valid in Italy or registration with the national health service.
Working during your studies
The student permit allows work within weekly and annual hour limits. The employment must be properly registered like any other, and the hours need monitoring: exceeding the limit can affect the renewal of your permit.
Renewal is annual and linked to academic progress. It must be requested at least 90 giorni before expiry, with the € 40,00 contribution and the other statutory items.
